About this coinHistory

The 1836 Reeded Edge proof half dollar is the transitional issue that closed one era of American silver coinage and opened another. In mid-1836 the Philadelphia Mint adopted a new closed-collar coining process for the half dollar, switching from the lettered edge to a reeded edge and reducing the diameter from 32.5 to 30 millimeters along with the weight from 13.48 to 13.36 grams. Christian Gobrecht modified the reverse for the new format, replacing the 50 C. denomination with HALF DOL. and slightly redrawing the eagle for the smaller planchet. Total Reeded Edge production for the year ran only about twelve hundred pieces, and surviving proofs from that tiny run sit somewhere between twenty-five and thirty known examples in modern censuses.

Authentication of the 1836 Reeded Edge proof begins with the new physical standards. The coin must weigh 13.36 grams, measure 30 millimeters in diameter, and carry a reeded edge rather than the inscribed lettering of earlier issues. The reverse should show the HALF DOL. denomination from Gobrecht's modified hub, and the rims should be squared with full mirror fields. Strike sharpness on Liberty's hair curls, the eagle's feather definition, and the legend lettering separates a true proof from any contemporary circulation strike that may show prooflike reflectivity. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) both grade the issue when proof diagnostics are confirmed.

Collector interest in the Reeded Edge proof is broad. Type collectors want it for the single-year Reeded Edge subtype with 50 C. carryover absent, design historians value the issue for the Gobrecht reverse work, and Capped Bust specialists treat it as the bridge between the old and new minting technologies. Auction appearances are infrequent enough that each sale tends to recalibrate the market for the date. Wider context on the technology shift and the entire Reich-Gobrecht run appears in the Capped Bust Half Dollar series history.
