About this coinHistory

The 1805 5-over-4 overdate is one of the most numismatically interesting Draped Bust half dollars and the direct evidence of why no 1804-dated halves exist. Dies originally prepared and dated 1804 at the Philadelphia Mint were recut by overpunching the final 4 with a 5 rather than discarding the otherwise serviceable steel, and the resulting overdate die was used to strike a portion of the 211,722-piece 1805 production. The diagnostic is visible to the naked eye on well-struck examples and unmistakable under 5x magnification: traces of the underlying 4 remain at the lower right of the 5, with the foot or serif of the 4 protruding below and beside the 5's base, and partial overlap visible in the upper portions of the digits. Robert Scot's Heraldic Eagle reverse continued unchanged from its 1801 introduction, and the coin follows the 1792 Coinage Act specifications: 412.5 grains, .8924 fine silver, with the lettered edge FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR.

Strike characteristics on overdate dies mirror the broader 1805 pattern, with softness in Liberty's upper hair curls and partial Heraldic Eagle shield definition common. Adjustment marks from planchet preparation at the 13.48-gram weight tolerance appear regularly and are original Mint production rather than damage. The variety carries a modest premium over the standard 1805 in most grade bands, although the spread widens noticeably in higher circulated and Mint State grades where collectors actively pursue clear, undamaged overdate examples for variety registry sets. PCGS and NGC populations for the 5/4 represent a meaningful share of total 1805 holdings, with the majority of certified survivors grading Very Good through Very Fine.

Authentication via current PCGS or NGC encapsulation with the overdate attribution noted on the label is essential. Counterfeit detection rests on confirming the 5/4 diagnostic against published Overton plates, on verifying weight at approximately 13.48 grams, and on ensuring the lettered edge is intact and unaltered. Raw coins with claimed overdate status frequently lack the genuine die diagnostic and are simply post-Mint damage or pareidolia. For variety-focused Heraldic Eagle reverse collectors, this issue provides a recognized acquisition target at moderate cost relative to named major rarities. For the broader story of Robert Scot's design, the Small Eagle to Heraldic Eagle transition, and the series' production arc, see the Draped Bust Half Dollar series history.
