Flowing Hair Half Dollars

Robert Scot engraved the Flowing Hair half dollar, working from the same design concept he applied to the dollar and half dime of the same period. The obverse depicted Liberty facing right with hair flowing freely behind her, surrounded by stars, with the date below. The reverse carried a small eagle perched within a wreath, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border, and the fractional denomination. Scot was the Mint's only working engraver at the time, cutting dies for multiple denominations under considerable pressure, and the results reflect the circumstances. The portrait is competent but somewhat crude, the eagle looks slightly uncomfortable on its perch, and the overall impression is of a coin made by a skilled craftsman working too fast with inadequate tools. Which is exactly what it was.
