About this coinHistory

The 1961 Doubled Die Reverse proof shows hub doubling on the reverse, visible on the lettering and the Liberty Bell. The doubling was created during the die-making process when the hub and die were slightly misaligned during one of the impressions. The variety is the most significant doubled die in the Franklin proof series and commands premiums over standard 1961 proofs.

Identifying the DDR requires examining the reverse lettering under magnification. The doubling is most visible on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and on the bell's inscription. Certified examples with the DDR attribution from PCGS or NGC eliminate the identification burden and establish the premium value.
