About this coinHistory

The 1847 7 Over 6 Seated Liberty Half Dollar is a celebrated overdate among Liberty Seated specialists and captures a small piece of mid-1840s Philadelphia Mint economy. An overdate is exactly what the name suggests: a working die originally cut with one year's date was repurposed for a later year by punching a new digit directly over the old one. Here, an 1846-dated obverse die was pulled back into service and a 7 driven into the final 6, leaving curved remnants of the older numeral inside and behind the corrected digit. Combined mintage of all Philadelphia 1847 halves stands at 1,156,000, but the overdate represents only a single die used for part of a single emission. Cataloged in the Wiley-Bugert die-marriage reference and listed in the Cherrypickers' Guide, it sits among the better-known Seated half overdates of the 1840s.

Authentication starts and ends at the date. Under a 10x loupe, the upper loop of the underlying 6 should be visible inside the lower bowl of the 7, with a short curved trace also showing in the open field to the right of the 7's vertical stroke. On well-preserved examples that ghost of the older numeral reads cleanly; on coins worn to Fine or below it softens into a blur and can be confused with strike fatigue, which is why honest mid-grade pieces are prized for letting the diagnostic stand on its own. A repunched die, in plain terms, is one where a punch was driven into the working die a second time in a slightly different position, and the proof of that second strike is what a buyer is paying for here. Supporting markers vary by die state, with later impressions showing modest fatigue at the date and stars. Surviving population is small in any grade, and choice Mint State coins are scarce.

Within a date-and-mintmark set the 1847 7 Over 6 is optional, but for collectors who pursue Seated halves by die marriage or who chase the major Cherrypickers' listings it is a required entry. Demand has historically outrun supply because the variety is famous and the diagnostic is satisfying under magnification.
