The 1861-O Seated Liberty Half Dollar is the most historically charged date in the series and the only United States coin produced under three separate governing authorities in a single calendar year. The reported delivery of 2,532,633 pieces conceals an extraordinary sequence at the New Orleans Mint. Federal coining ran from the first business days of January until January 25, accounting for roughly 330,000 pieces. The next morning Louisiana adopted its ordinance of secession and seized the facility; State authority struck approximately 1,240,000 halves through late March. On April 1 the building passed to the Confederate States of America, which produced an estimated 962,000 additional pieces before bullion shortages ended silver coinage at the end of May.
Because all three regimes used the same federal dies left in the building when the political ground shifted, the standard 1861-O carries no marking that announces which government paid for the silver, and the plain entry on this page is intentionally undifferentiated, it covers Federal, Louisiana State, and Confederate output as a single combined issue, the way the coin trades today. Specialist research by Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (Gobrecht Journal #94, 2005) identified fourteen documented die marriages for the year and assigned each to a coining authority by working backward from die wear and delivery records: marriages 1 through 3 are Federal, 4 through 8 are State of Louisiana, and 9 through 14 are Confederate. Strike quality across all three runs follows late No Motto New Orleans pattern, with the eagle's claws above HALF DOL. and the lower shield lines the first details to surrender as dies aged. Authentication holds across the year, 12.44 grams of .900 silver, 30.6 millimeters, reeded edge, mintmark "O" below the eagle, no motto across the upper reverse (IN GOD WE TRUST did not arrive on the half dollar until 1866). Survival is broad: circulated Good through Very Fine examples are genuinely common, Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated coins surface regularly, and Mint State pieces above MS62 step firmly into condition-rarity territory. The famous 1861-O CSA Obverse, bearing a prominent die crack running diagonally from the bridge of Liberty's nose up to the denticles right of the seventh star, traceable to one specific Confederate-era die also used for the four genuine Confederate States half dollars, is catalogued separately on its own page and trades at substantial premiums.
For collectors, the 1861-O is the rare instance where one date encapsulates a national rupture in coined silver; a circulated piece in VG through XF places three governments in the same album slot at modest cost. For broader context on the design's evolution and the wartime suspensions that ended the New Orleans branch's Seated half production after this year, see the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series history.
