About this coinHistory

The 1869 proof half dollar is the fourth-year Philadelphia delivery of the Type 5 With Motto subtype, struck for the silver proof set subscription program that had run continuously since 1858. Original delivery is reported at approximately 600 pieces, holding flat against 1868 before the program stepped up to roughly 1,000 sets in 1870. The 795,900 figure on this page is the Philadelphia business-strike delivery for the year and has no bearing on this proof entry, a separately accounted medal-press run from polished dies. Sheldon rarity sits in the R-4 band (roughly 76 to 200 known across all grades, the standard scale specialists use to describe survival). The calendar year carried the completion of the first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Summit on May 10 and the Fisk-Gould gold corner that triggered the Black Friday panic on September 24, with silver still holding a premium against paper.

Authentication rests on structural diagnostics rather than mirror depth alone. A genuine 1869 proof reads as deeply mirrored watery fields with controlled die-polish lines visible under a 10x loupe (a jeweler's magnifier), set against frosted devices on early die states, with the motto ribbon above the eagle fully struck and the letters of TRUST sharp on both sides of the central fold. Rims must be fully squared and raised perpendicular to the field, the signature of multiple medal-press blows. Denticles (the tooth-like beads ringing the rim) should be sharp and fully formed. Weight is load-bearing at 12.44 grams on a .900 fine silver planchet at 30.6 millimeters; anything off-weight is disqualified outright. The recurring risk is the prooflike business strike pulled from polished circulation dies, which can mimic the reflective look without the squared rims of a true proof. PCGS or NGC encapsulation is the working standard.

For collectors, the 1869 is one of the lower-mintage With Motto proofs of the 1866 through 1873 run and trades behind the 1866 first-year-of-motto entry but in the same general band as the 1867 and 1868. The Regular classification follows site convention for proof entries; rarity is carried by the prose, not the badge. Cameo and deep cameo subsets price well over standard mirrors. For broader context on the motto transition and the design history through both subtypes, see the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series history.
