The 1872 proof Seated Liberty half dollar is a Philadelphia collector issue struck under the With Motto reverse adopted in 1866 and delivered to subscribers as part of the Mint's annual silver proof set program. The 881,550 figure shown on this page is a combined total: 880,600 business strikes plus the proof delivery of approximately 950 pieces documented by John Dannreuther and consistent with the Mint Director's annual report, and the two should be read as separate productions. Specie payments remained suspended under the December 30, 1861 order, but the proof program ran on its own track and shipped to collectors and a handful of foreign cabinets. The coin carries the matured Christian Gobrecht obverse and the With Motto reverse eagle that would anchor the type through the February 12, 1873 Coinage Act weight change.
Authentication of an 1872 proof rests on the diagnostics specific to close-collar proof striking rather than business-strike sharpness alone. Genuine examples show squared, perpendicular rims raised cleanly from the field, fully formed denticles around the entire periphery, and watery deep-mirror reflectivity in the open fields around Liberty and below the eagle. Under magnification, controlled die-polish lines run in consistent directions across the fields rather than the radial flow lines that mark every business strike, and the date, stars, and motto ribbon resolve with razor edges. Physical specifications must hold at 12.44 grams, 30.6 millimeters, .900 silver, with a true reeded edge and coin-turn alignment. Deeply prooflike Philadelphia business strikes from the period can carry mirror-like surfaces but lack the squared rims and structural strike depth of a true proof, so PCGS or NGC certification is the practical standard for any candidate trading at proof prices.
For collectors, the 1872 proof is an obtainable Philadelphia proof half dollar at R-4 (76 to 200 known), available in most major auctions and priced in line with other early-1870s proof halves rather than carrying the premium of the pre-1858 dates. Cameo and deep-cameo designations carry significant premiums, and gem PR65 and finer pieces are scarce relative to PR62 to PR64 survivors. The Regular classification on this page follows the site convention for proof entries.
