About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 580,000 half dollars in 1872, a notable drop from the 2.1 million produced there the prior year. The decline reflected a shift in how Nevada's Comstock Lode silver was being distributed. With the Carson City Mint now operational and absorbing a growing share of western bullion, less raw silver flowed west by rail to the San Francisco refinery. The 1872-S nevertheless entered active commercial circulation along the Pacific coast, where silver coin remained the preferred medium of exchange and where Eastern paper currency was still distrusted by merchants and miners alike. These were working coins from the start, handled hard in saloons, freight offices, and assay rooms.

The 1872-S is a Type 5 With Motto issue, carrying the "IN GOD WE TRUST" scroll above the eagle that had been added to the half dollar in 1866. San Francisco strikes of this era are typically sharply impressed, with full stars, crisp shield lines, and bold motto lettering when fresh from the dies, reflecting the branch mint's strong striking pressure on its silver issues. Circulated survivors most often grade in the Good to Fine range, with Liberty's gown folds softened and the shield horizontals merged across her midsection. Very Fine and better pieces show recoverable hair detail above the ear and separated shield lines, while problem-free examples with original gray patina remain genuinely scarce. Cleaned and dipped coins are common in the marketplace and should be approached with caution by collectors building a matched-toning set. Authenticators check the S mintmark for proper Type B punch shape and undisturbed surrounding field to screen for added-mintmark fakes built from common Philadelphia base coins, then verify weight at 12.44 grams and diameter at 30.6 millimeters to rule out cast and altered-date counterfeits. Mint State examples turn up infrequently and almost always carry the soft strike on Liberty's head or the eagle's leg feathers that signals a late-die-state piece rather than an early impression.
