About this coinHistory

The 1873 Close 3 No Arrows half dollar belongs to one of the most significant transition years in nineteenth-century American coinage. When Philadelphia opened production in January, engravers used a date logotype whose final numeral had a tightly drawn upper and lower curve, the two loops nearly meeting so that on lightly struck coins the digit reads almost like an 8. After collectors and bank tellers began complaining that the date was difficult to read, the Mint replaced the logotype mid-year with the more legible Open 3 punch, and a few months later the Coinage Act of February 12, 1873 forced a second change by adding arrows beside the date to flag a small weight increase. The Close 3 No Arrows therefore captures Philadelphia output from the opening weeks of the year, struck on the older 12.44-gram standard before either the date correction or the arrows revision took effect.

Attribution turns on two paired checks made at the date under a 10x loupe. First, confirm the Close 3 punch itself: the upper and lower curves of the numeral bend sharply inward and the gap between their tips is narrow, sometimes only a hair, where the Open 3 leaves a clearly visible space between the two loop ends. On worn examples the Close 3 can momentarily resemble an 8, and that 8-like appearance is the strongest field diagnostic. Second, confirm No Arrows by checking the flanks of the date: the field on either side of 1873 must be plain, with no arrowhead motifs intruding toward the 1 or the 3. The Arrows variety is catalogued separately and carries the heavier 12.50-gram weight. Strike on Close 3 examples is usually decent for the date, with central head detail varying by die state; watch for evenly worn date digits, since a softly struck Open 3 can be mistaken for a Close 3 if the loop tips have flattened.

Mintage records report 1,815,700 combined 1873 Philadelphia No Arrows pieces, of which numismatic estimates assign roughly 2.5 times more production to the Close 3 than to the Open 3. The Close 3 is therefore the more available of the two No Arrows subtypes in circulated grades, and presentable Fine through Extremely Fine examples appear regularly at auction at modest premiums over generic Seated half pricing. Mint State coins are scarcer than their mintage suggests, in part because so many 1873 No Arrows halves were pulled from circulation and melted after the new weight standard took hold. Demand comes from two directions: date-set collectors who need a Close 3 to anchor the pre-Arrows Philadelphia entry, and transition-year specialists who pursue all three 1873 P subtypes side by side to document the year's two distinct design corrections. For collectors who want the full picture of how this issue fits into the broader 1839-1891 story, see the Seated Liberty Half Dollar series history.
