About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,200,000 half dollars in 1875, a production figure that dwarfed the branch mint's recent output and represented its largest half dollar season since the weight-reduction year of 1855. The surge had two clear drivers. The Specie Resumption Act, signed in January, had set January 1, 1879 as the deadline for returning paper currency to gold convertibility, and the Treasury wanted hard silver coin moving back into commercial channels well ahead of that date. At the same time, Comstock Lode bullion was reaching San Francisco refineries in heavier volume than at any previous point in the decade, giving the mint ample feedstock. With the brief arrows-at-date subtype retired earlier in the year, the 1875-S returned to the standard With Motto configuration and entered Pacific coast commerce as a true workhorse coin, handled in saloons, freight offices, and the rough cash economies of the western mining districts.

San Francisco strikes from this period tend to come out sharp when the dies were fresh, with bold shield horizontals, full motto lettering across the scroll, and crisp star centers on the obverse. Late-die-state coins are equally common, however, and these show the familiar branch-mint softness on Liberty's head, the eagle's right leg, and the higher relief of the gown folds. Grade distribution is heavy in the circulated bands. Good through Fine pieces are easy to source and trade close to silver melt plus a modest collector premium, while Very Fine and Extremely Fine survivors with original gray patina remain the sweet spot for date-set builders. About Uncirculated coins appear regularly at auction, and Mint State examples exist in sufficient numbers that a patient buyer can locate an MS-62 or MS-63 without difficulty, though gem pieces with full strike and undisturbed luster thin out quickly. Cleaned and dipped coins are widespread in the marketplace and warrant careful inspection under angled light.
