About this coinHistory

The 1841 large cent was produced in healthy quantity at the Philadelphia Mint, the only facility striking copper cents at the time. Christian Gobrecht's Braided Hair design continued unchanged from its 1840 introduction. The obverse shows Liberty facing left, her hair woven into a braid and gathered behind her head, wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY. The reverse carries a wreath enclosing the words ONE CENT.

In 1841, the United States was recovering from the Panic of 1837, a severe economic downturn that had shuttered banks and stalled commerce across the country. The large copper cent remained essential to daily transactions. Weighing about 10.9 grams and measuring 27.5 millimeters across, it was roughly the size of a modern half dollar. The 1841 is available in circulated grades across the typical range for the series. Good to Fine examples are readily found, and the date does not carry unusual premiums beyond its base value as a Braided Hair cent.
