About this coinHistory

The 1841 proof large cent was struck in very small numbers at the Philadelphia Mint. In the early 1840s, proof coin production was an informal affair. The Mint had no published price list for proof coins, no regular ordering process, and no annual proof sets. A collector who wanted a proof cent had to know someone at the Mint or write to the director requesting one. The coins were struck on a hand-operated screw press, one at a time, using dies that had been polished to a mirror finish. Planchets were specially selected for smooth, defect-free surfaces.

The number of people collecting coins in the United States in 1841 was tiny. Fewer than a dozen serious collectors are documented for this period, and proof cent production reflected that small audience. Surviving 1841 proofs are rare. Each one represents a deliberate act of craftsmanship aimed at a buyer who valued the coin not for its purchasing power but for its precision and beauty.
