About this coinHistory

The 1843 Petite Head, Small Letters variety combines the smaller, more delicate portrait with compact reverse lettering. The Petite Head shows Liberty with a slightly smaller, more finely featured face compared to the Mature Head. The difference is visible without magnification on coins in Fine or better.

The Petite Head was used on earlier 1843 dies before the Mint transitioned to the Mature Head. Combined with small reverse letters, this variety represents one specific die marriage from the earlier portion of the year's production.
