About this coinHistory

The 1844 proof large cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in very small numbers. The proof production process required a Mint worker to polish the dies between strikes, removing any contact marks or imperfections from the die face. The copper planchet was cleaned and inspected before being placed in the press. The screw press was operated by hand, and the coiner could control the force of the strike to ensure a full, sharp impression.

By 1844, a handful of dedicated collectors in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston were actively requesting proof coins from the Mint. The hobby was in its infancy. No coin publications existed yet, no price guides, no grading standards. Collectors corresponded by letter and sometimes met in person to compare specimens. The 1844 proof large cent survives in very small numbers, each coin a relic of this early period when collecting American coins was a private pursuit shared among a few dozen enthusiasts at most.
