About this coinHistory

The 1847 proof large cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint for collectors during a year that saw massive circulation-strike output. The standard 1847 cent was one of the higher-mintage dates in the series, which makes the proof version a sharp contrast: millions of coins for commerce, and perhaps a dozen or so struck with care for the collector's cabinet.

The proof striking process in 1847 remained a craft operation. A press operator polished the dies, selected a clean planchet, positioned it by hand, and pulled the lever to deliver a single controlled strike. The resulting coin shows full mirror fields and complete design detail. By the late 1840s, the collector base for American coins was slowly expanding beyond the original handful of Philadelphia gentlemen. New collectors in New York and other cities were beginning to seek out proof issues, though the Mint still had no formal system for filling orders. Surviving 1847 proof cents are rare, with each example traceable through a short chain of known owners.
