About this coinHistory

The 1851/81 overdate shows digits from an 1841 die beneath the 1851 date. The Mint repurposed a decade-old die by overpunching the date. Traces of the original 41 are visible beneath the 51 on well-preserved examples. The ten-year gap between the original and updated date makes this one of the most dramatic overdates in the Braided Hair series.

Identification requires magnification and familiarity with the specific die diagnostics. Certification services attribute the overdate. The variety carries a premium over the standard 1851.
