Mint records show approximately 1,514 Type 2 proof Buffalo nickels for 1913, struck after the reverse modification that moved FIVE CENTS into the recessed area below the bison. The Type 2 proofs continued the matte finish format that had been used for the Type 1 proofs, with satin fields and sharp device detail producing the distinctive appearance of early Buffalo nickel proofs.
The 1913 Type 2 proof is the second sub-type of the year and is required alongside the Type 1 for complete 1913 proof Buffalo nickel representation. Both coins share the matte finish format but differ in reverse design, and specialist collectors acquire both to document the year's dual-type production.
Strike quality is typically sharp on well-preserved examples. The matte proof surface can show handling marks more readily than brilliant proofs, so preservation quality varies significantly among surviving pieces. PR64 through PR66 examples appear at major auctions periodically, and higher-grade specimens are scarcer and command proportionally higher prices.
