About this coinHistory

Philadelphia produced approximately 6,783 With CENTS proofs after the mid-year reverse modification added CENTS to the design. The higher mintage (compared to the 5,219 No CENTS proofs) reflects the longer production window available after the June design change, and the two 1883 proof varieties together represent the only year in the entire Liberty Head series with multiple proof reverse sub-types. Distribution was through the Mint's standard collector channels alongside other denominations in the year's proof sets.

Strike quality and preservation follow the standard pattern for early 1880s Philadelphia proofs. Mirror fields, frosted devices, and generally crisp detail characterize most surviving examples. PR64 and PR65 coins appear with some regularity at major auctions, and Cameo examples trade at premiums over non-Cameo specimens of the same grade.

For collectors building a complete Liberty Head proof set, the 1883 With CENTS is the companion to the No CENTS variety. Both are required to document the full year's proof production, and both are available without extraordinary difficulty in PR63 through PR65 grades. Higher-grade examples (PR66 and above) are scarcer and command corresponding premiums. Together the two coins document the design transition that defined the series' first year.
