About this coinHistory

Mint records show 3,336 proof Liberty Head nickels for 1889, a modest figure reflecting steady collector demand for proof sets at the end of the 1880s. Proof production techniques continued to yield consistently high-quality coins with strong mirror fields and frosted devices. The 1889 is a typical late-1880s proof date, scarcer than the mid-1880s years without approaching the rarity of the 1887.

Collectors building complete Liberty Head proof sets acquire the 1889 without extraordinary difficulty. PR63 through PR65 examples appear regularly at major auctions and through specialist dealers, and the coin is available in Cameo designation at modest premiums over non-Cameo specimens. Deep Cameo pieces are scarcer and command proportional premiums.

1889 was the year the Oklahoma Land Rush opened former Indian Territory to white settlement on April 22, when 50,000 people lined up at the border and raced to claim 160-acre homesteads at the sound of a cannon at noon. The rush created the cities of Guthrie and Oklahoma City in a single afternoon. Liberty Head nickels from 1889 that circulated through the new territory were the first American coinage to reach the Oklahoma settlements through organized commerce.
