About this coinHistory

Proof mintage for 1901 was 1,985 coins, a slight decline from 1900 but still within the normal range for the post-Panic recovery period. Proof production continued its gradual upward trend, reflecting growing hobby interest as the twentieth century began. The 1901 is comparable in rarity to 1900 and commands similar prices in specialist markets.

Strike quality is typical for Philadelphia proofs: mirror fields, frosted devices, and sharp detail on well-preserved examples. Cameo examples are available at modest premiums, and Deep Cameo pieces are scarcer but obtainable through specialist channels. The 1901 proof is a required entry in complete Liberty Head proof sets and is acquired without extraordinary difficulty.

McKinley's assassination in September 1901 changed the political landscape for the remaining proof production year. Subscribers receiving their 1901 sets in the last weeks of the year were handling coins produced during an administration that had just transitioned from William McKinley to Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt's later patronage of Saint-Gaudens would produce the gold coin redesigns that began replacing the Barber-Longacre aesthetic on American coinage, and the eventual replacement of the Liberty Head nickel in 1913 was a direct consequence of the Renaissance of American Coinage Roosevelt had set in motion.
