About this coinHistory

4,763 proof Liberty Head nickels left Philadelphia in 1909, a significant jump from the late-1900s lows and reflecting renewed collector interest partly driven by the introduction of the Lincoln cent. The new Lincoln design attracted widespread attention and boosted proof set sales across all denominations, including the Liberty Head nickel. The 1909 is correspondingly less scarce than adjacent years and represents the high water mark of twentieth-century Liberty Head proof production.

Strike quality is strong for the year. Philadelphia's proof production techniques continued to yield consistently high-quality coins, and the 1909 shows typical mirror fields, frosted devices, and sharp detail on well-preserved examples. Cameo pieces are available at modest premiums, and Deep Cameo examples are obtainable through specialist channels at higher prices.

The 1909 was the year the Lincoln cent replaced the Indian Head design, marking the first appearance of a real historical figure on regular US coinage. The introduction generated significant publicity and brought new collectors into the hobby, effects that carried over to proof set sales for all denominations. The Liberty Head nickel still had four years of production ahead in 1909, but its days as the standard American nickel were being counted.
