By 1868 the annual Shield nickel proof had become a routine offering. The Mint struck approximately 600 proofs for the year, matching the No Rays production of 1867 and settling into the steady annual pattern that would define Shield nickel proof production for most of the next decade and a half. Proofs were distributed primarily through direct collector request, the Mint having no formal annual subscription program at that point, and sales served the expanding collector community that had developed during the 1850s and continued growing through the postwar period.
Surviving examples typically grade PR63 through PR66, with most showing the deep mirror fields and frosted devices characteristic of well-made early proof production. Cameo contrast is available on coins struck from fresh dies and commands meaningful premiums over non-Cameo specimens at the same grade. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers offer certified examples regularly, with prices reflecting the date's scarcity without the extreme premiums of the 1867 With Rays and Pattern Reverse proofs.
The 1868 proof shipped to subscribers during the same year Congress impeached Andrew Johnson in February, ran his Senate trial through May, and watched him acquitted by one vote. Ulysses Grant was elected in November. The proof coins reaching collectors that year passed through the postal system as the constitutional crisis was unfolding, and the coin's mirror fields preserve the design at its sharpest moment while the country was deciding whether to remove a president from office.
