Proof production jumped to approximately 1,150 coins in 1876, a notable recovery from the 700 of 1875 that likely reflected Centennial-year collector interest. The Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia drew nearly ten million visitors between May and November, and the Philadelphia Mint was a short walk from the fair grounds. Mint Cabinet tours and direct proof purchases both increased during the exposition, and the year's proof production responded to the spike in foot traffic from collectors who were in Philadelphia anyway and wanted a current-year set while they were in town.
Surviving populations are higher than for surrounding years because of the larger original mintage and the higher contemporary preservation rate. PR63 through PR66 examples appear regularly at major auctions, and Cameo and Deep Cameo designations are more commonly available than on other 1870s proof dates. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers offer certified examples at moderate premiums, and the 1876 is one of the more accessible Shield nickel proofs in upper grade levels.
For collectors building Shield nickel proof sets, the 1876 is often one of the easier dates to acquire in PR65 or better condition. The Centennial-year enthusiasm that drove proof production also produced a pool of well-preserved survivors that has continued to serve the modern market with relatively reasonable supply compared to scarcer years such as 1869 or 1875. Specialists finishing a Shield nickel proof set often find the 1876 an early and comfortable acquisition before turning to the more challenging dates.
