The Mint reused an 1878 proof die for 1879. The working die had been originally prepared for the 1878 proof-only year, and when 1879 production began the engraving department chose to overpunch the final digit with a 9 and keep the die in use. Traces of the underlying 8 remain visible beneath the 9 on well-preserved examples, with the diagnostic clearest on coins examined under magnification. The overdate exists only as a proof variety and is one of the more unusual entries in the Shield nickel series, combining proof rarity with overdate collecting appeal in a single coin. The discovery is surprising: modern research by John Dannreuther in 2023 found that the overdate actually comprises roughly 65 to 70 percent of the 3,200 total 1879 proofs, making the overdate the dominant marriage and reducing the perfect date to roughly 1,120 pieces.
Two die marriages produced the overdate. JD-1 (Obverse 1 with Reverse A) is the overwhelming majority. JD-4 (Obverse 1 with Reverse D) is the rare outlier at about 5 percent of the total, distinguished by a "fishhook S" in CENTS that comes from doubled die hubbing of the normal hub and the defective Broken S hub. The variety is attributed by both PCGS and NGC, and Charles Morgan has addressed the ongoing specialist debate over whether the feature is a true overdate directly: "While some have argued that the overdate is actually a repunched 9 or a result of a clogged die, the characteristics of an 8 punch are clearly visible under magnification." Walter Breen's original diagnostic holds: "the 9 is narrower than the 8, and faint traces of 8 can sometimes be seen on either side, but usually only within top and bottom." Breen's conclusion that the overdate "forms a small minority of the proofs" has been definitively disproved by both modern population data and Dannreuther's die marriage research.
The auction record is $84,000 for a PCGS PR69 sold by Heritage in January 2019, a coin that carries a distinction no other Shield nickel proof can claim: it is the only Shield nickel proof of any date ever certified at PR69 by either grading service. The pedigree chain is instructive. It first appeared at Bowers and Merena in January 2000 at $23,000, then passed through the Just Having Fun Collection and offered (unsold) at Stack's Bowers in October 2014, then sold at Heritage in January 2019 for $84,000. The coin is a JD-1 marriage in an Old Green Holder with crescent rainbow toning and a single diagnostic dark toning spot at the left side of the stem of the second T in STATES. Heritage described the surfaces as "reflective beneath a layer of pastel iridescence that includes shades of blue, green, rose, and lemon-gold, with both sides flawless," marred only by a single lint mark near the right serif of the T in CENTS. It sits alone at the top of the Shield nickel proof census.
