By 1882 the Shield nickel was producing normal-scale circulation mintages again, the depression having lifted and commercial demand restored. Proof production for the year held at approximately 3,100 coins, consistent with the late-1870s and early-1880s pattern and unaffected by the dramatic recovery in business strike output that had brought 1882 circulation production back above eleven million coins. Collector demand and commercial demand had been moving on different schedules throughout the decade, and the proof program continued without particular reaction to the business strike recovery.
Surviving populations are adequate for collector demand, with PR63 through PR66 examples regularly available through major auction houses at moderate premiums. Cameo and Deep Cameo designations are available on the best-preserved examples. The 1882 proof is one of the more accessible Shield nickel proofs in upper grade levels because the higher original mintage produced more well-preserved survivors than the earlier years, and the combination of reasonable availability and the coin's standard-issue status keeps prices comfortable for collectors building proof sets.
For collectors building complete proof Shield nickel sets, the 1882 is a routine entry without particular distinction. The date carries neither the proof-only premium of 1877 or 1878, the key-date pairing of 1879 or 1880, nor the variety appeal of the 1879/8 overdate or the 1873 Closed/Open 3 split. It is a standard proof from the closing years of the series, acquired without competition at current market prices, and it serves the practical purpose of filling the 1882 slot in a year-by-year collection.
