The 1858/(7) Weak overdate is one of two recognized overdate varieties for the 1858 Flying Eagle cent. The Mint reused an 1857 die by overpunching the final digit with an 8. On the Weak version, the traces of the underlying 7 are faint, visible primarily as a slight irregularity in the shape of the 8. The overdate requires magnification and some familiarity with the diagnostic to confirm.
Die reuse was standard Mint practice throughout the nineteenth century. The Flying Eagle cent's two-year circulation run (1857-1858) meant the Mint had 1857 dies available when 1858 production began, and converting them by overpunching the date was faster and cheaper than cutting new dies from scratch. The resulting overdates are collected as distinct varieties, with the Strong and Weak designations reflecting how much of the underlying 7 survived the overpunching.
The Weak overdate is less dramatic visually than the Strong version and correspondingly less expensive, though it still carries a premium over standard 1858 cents. Certification services attribute both overdate varieties, and the designation on the holder (Strong or Weak) determines the market pricing. For a collector who wants an overdate Flying Eagle without paying the Strong overdate premium, the Weak version offers the same production story at a lower cost.
