The 1860 proof Indian Head cent is the first proof with the Oak Wreath and Shield reverse. The Mint struck approximately 1,000 proofs for the year, reflecting the continued growth of the collector market in the years before the Civil War. The proof shows the new, more elaborate reverse design in sharp detail: every leaf in the oak wreath defined, the shield at the top crisp, and the denomination clearly rendered.
By 1860, the Mint had established a regular proof production schedule. Collectors could purchase proof sets directly from the Mint by mail, a system that would continue through the century. The 1860 proof cent was part of a set that also included proof versions of other denominations. The copper-nickel composition produces a bright, reflective proof surface that has aged better than many earlier copper proofs, which tend to darken and tone over time.
