The 1862 proof Indian Head cent was produced in a mintage of approximately 550 proofs. The lower figure compared to 1860 and 1861 may reflect wartime disruptions to the collector market, mail delivery, or simply lower demand in a year of national crisis. The proof retains the copper-nickel composition and shows the full Oak Wreath reverse in sharp relief.
Surviving 1862 proofs appear at auction with regularity. The copper-nickel alloy ages well in proof format, retaining its bright, reflective surface more reliably than bronze proofs, which tend to develop spots and toning over time. A well-preserved 1862 proof with original surfaces is a handsome coin that shows the Indian Head design at its best.
