About this coinHistory

The 1864 Bronze proof Indian Head cent is the first proof struck in the new bronze composition. The Mint produced proofs in both compositions during 1864: copper-nickel proofs early in the year and bronze proofs after the changeover. The bronze proof has a different character from the copper-nickel proofs that preceded it. The softer metal takes a warmer, more richly colored proof finish, and the surfaces develop toning patterns that copper-nickel does not.

Proof mintage for the 1864 Bronze is estimated at approximately 370 coins. The proof shows the full design in sharp relief, with the newly softer bronze allowing the dies to impress every detail cleanly. Bronze proofs from this era frequently exhibit original red or red-brown color, which commands significant premiums over fully toned brown examples. The 1864 Bronze proof inaugurated a forty-five-year run of bronze proof Indian Head cents.
