About this coinHistory

The 1867/67 repunched date shows evidence of the date being punched into the die twice, with the second impression slightly offset from the first. The doubling is visible in the date digits, where ghost images of the numerals appear alongside the correctly positioned ones. Repunched dates are distinguished from overdates (where a different year's digit is visible) by the fact that both impressions show the same numerals, just in slightly different positions.

The repunching occurred during die preparation, when the engraver positioned the date punch slightly off from the intended location, then corrected by punching again in the right position. The initial impression was not removed, and the resulting doubling is permanent on every coin from that die. The variety is recognized by major grading services and carries a premium over the standard 1867.
