About this coinHistory

The 1875 Indian Head cent was produced in a mintage of approximately 13.5 million coins. The date is available in circulated grades without unusual difficulty. The Depression of 1873, which lasted until approximately 1879, was still gripping the American economy in 1875. Banks were failing, railroads were going bankrupt, and unemployment remained high. The copper cent circulated through this economic hardship, handling the small transactions that kept daily life functioning even when larger commerce was stalled.

The 1875 does not carry the semi-key premiums of the 1866-1872 dates. The higher mintage places it in the middle tier of Indian Head availability: not as common as the 1880s-1890s dates but not as scarce as the low-production years of the late 1860s.
