The 1879 proof was struck in approximately 3,200 proofs. The sharp increase in proof production (from 2,350 in 1878) reflects the growing collector base in the post-depression economy. More collectors meant more proof sales, and the Mint expanded production to meet demand. The higher mintage makes the 1879 proof one of the more available Indian Head proofs, and pricing is correspondingly moderate by proof standards.
