About this coinHistory

The 1887 Indian Head cent was struck in a mintage of approximately 45.2 million coins, among the highest in the series. The late 1880s were a period of continued industrial expansion and growing consumerism. The cent was deeply embedded in daily American life: omnibus fares, penny candy, newspaper purchases, tips, and small retail transactions all ran on copper. The 1887 is a common date, plentiful and affordable.
