About this coinHistory

The 1895 Indian Head cent was produced in approximately 38.3 million coins, a recovery from the depressed output of 1894 even though the economic depression continued. The cent circulated during a period when Coxey's Army had marched on Washington, the Pullman Strike had been broken by federal troops, and the silver versus gold standard debate was consuming national politics. William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech was a year away.
