About this coinHistory

The 1917 Lincoln cent from Philadelphia was struck in approximately 196.4 million coins, a massive output that reflected wartime demand. The United States entered World War I in April 1917, and the economic mobilization that followed required coinage in unprecedented quantities. Soldiers' pay, factory wages, and the expanding domestic economy all needed cents. The Mint responded with record production. The 1917 is one of the most common Wheat cents.
