About this coinHistory

The 1944-D D/S (D over S) variety shows a D mintmark punched over an S mintmark in the die. The Mint occasionally reused dies from one facility at another, and when the mintmark needed to be changed, the new letter was punched over the old one. On this variety, traces of the underlying S are visible around the D. The variety is recognized by major grading services and carries a premium over the standard 1944-D.
