About this coinHistory

The 2013-S Proof Lincoln Shield cent was struck at the San Francisco Mint with a production of approximately 1.24 million pieces, nearly identical to the 2012 figure. The stability in proof set sales suggested that the collector market had settled into a consistent level of demand after the spikes and dips of previous years.

The proof finish on the Shield cent creates a distinctive visual effect. The thirteen vertical stripes on the shield alternate between frosted and mirrored surfaces, giving the design a layered, almost three-dimensional appearance. The "S" mintmark below the date on the obverse identifies these coins as San Francisco products. Proof cents are never released into circulation and are sold exclusively through the U.S. Mint's direct ordering program.
