About this coinHistory

The 2019 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint had a mintage of approximately 3.54 billion pieces, a decline from the peak production years of 2015 and 2016. The lower output reflected evolving patterns in currency demand rather than any policy change. Electronic payment methods continued to capture a growing share of retail transactions, gradually reducing the need for physical small change.

The 2019 cent year was one of the most eventful in modern Lincoln cent history. The U.S. Mint released cents with the "W" mintmark of the West Point Mint for the first time, creating a nationwide treasure hunt as collectors searched their pocket change for the scarce West Point coins. The standard Philadelphia cent, without a mintmark, represented the vast majority of 2019 cents in circulation and continued to serve the denomination's traditional commercial function.
