The 2022 Lincoln Shield cent from the Philadelphia Mint had a mintage of approximately 3.06 billion pieces. Production settled back toward pre-pandemic levels as the national coin shortage gradually eased. The Federal Reserve reported improved coin circulation throughout 2022, though the supply chain had not fully returned to its pre-2020 equilibrium.
The 2022 cent continued the Shield reverse design into its thirteenth year. The design had surpassed the Memorial reverse's first thirteen years (1959 to 1971) without any modifications, while the Memorial design had undergone a subtle change in 1969 when Frank Gasparro added the tiny initials "FG" to the reverse. The Shield design has remained unaltered since its 2010 debut. Philadelphia's 2022 cents carry no mintmark, maintaining the tradition established at the nation's first Mint in 1792.
