The 1894-S quarter carries a 2,648,821-piece mintage, the third S-mint Barber Quarter and a substantial increase over both the 1892-S and 1893-S figures. The jump reflects rising West-coast commercial demand as the Barber design settled into circulation. Mintmark placement on the 1894-S follows the corrected post-1892 standard, with the S sitting either above the space between R and D or above the left edge of the D depending on the die; both sub-positions are routine and neither carries a premium. Type II reverse hub throughout. Distribution stayed largely regional, and the coins worked through circulation hard across the Pacific Coast and Mountain West.
Strike on the 1894-S typically runs softer than Philadelphia output but firmer than the 1893-S baseline. Liberty's hair under the cap shows reasonable detail on better coins, and the wreath leaves hold up better than on most 1890s San Francisco issues. The eagle's lower right leg, arrow shafts, and shield base remain the standard weak points, and dealers grading the date watch those zones closely. Authentication notes for the 1894-S include mintmark style and the relationship between the S and the surrounding letters; added-mintmark counterfeits altered from 1894 Philadelphia coins do appear on the market, and weight (the standard 6.25 grams on the 90% silver alloy) is a quick first check when something looks wrong. Population data through PCGS and NGC (the major TPGs, or third-party grading services) places most surviving Mint State coins at MS-62 through MS-64, with MS-65 a clear step up and MS-66 scarce.
Date-set position is firm and uncomplicated. The 1894-S fills its slot without major-key pricing pressure, and circulated grades from G through VF turn over routinely at dealers. XF and AU need a careful look at eye appeal, and Mint State requires auction patience above MS-64. Type-set buyers can skip the date in favor of cheaper Philadelphia coins, but San Francisco specialists and Barber completionists need it. For broader design and mint-distribution context, see the Barber Quarter series history.
