About this coinHistory

Historical Significance & Production Context
Posted 2026-04-14. The 1896-S Barber Quarter is the first true Key Date of the series and one of the famous Barber Quarter trifecta alongside 1901-S and 1913-S. Just 188,039 pieces were struck at San Francisco that year, a figure tied to depressed West Coast economic conditions in the wake of the 1893 panic and reduced silver bullion deposits from mining operations. The Mint produced what the regional economy needed, and that demand was modest. By the time collectors began systematically pulling Barber quarters from circulation in the 1930s and 1940s, the 1896-S was already recognized as the date to find, and most examples had been worn smooth from decades of heavy commercial use along the Pacific rail corridors and Sierra Nevada mining towns.

Specifications, Authentication & Surface Analysis
Standard specifications apply: 6.25 grams, 24.3 millimeters, 90% silver and 10% copper, reeded edge. Given the price level of this Key Date across all grades, certification through PCGS or NGC is essentially mandatory; raw examples should be approached with extreme caution. The primary counterfeit threat is an added S mintmark on a common 1896 Philadelphia host coin. Inspect the field around the S under at least 10x magnification for tooling marks, raised metal disruption, or a faint seam indicating a punch was applied to the struck coin. The genuine 1896-S mintmark is small, round, with even die-cut interior walls, and at least two distinct mintmark positions are documented for this date. Weight verification at exactly 6.25 grams will flag cast or pressed counterfeits, which almost always run light or heavy. The grain of the silver surface, sharpness of denticles, and continuity of the die flow lines all serve as additional authentication checkpoints.

Collector Value & Survivorship
Survivor estimates per PCGS run roughly 1,000 to 1,500 examples across all grades, with the bulk in lower circulated condition. Even AG and Good examples command three-figure prices, and choice EF or AU pieces sell into four figures with frequency. Mint State survivors are rare, with only a few dozen graded at MS-63 or higher, and gem examples have brought five figures at major auctions, with one MS-66 reaching $96,000 in 2020. Every serious Barber Quarter date set must eventually confront this coin, and patience usually rewards collectors who wait for the right grade and provenance.
