About this coinHistory

The 1902-O quarter posted a mintage of 4,748,000 pieces at the New Orleans Mint, an unusually large figure for an O-mint Barber Quarter and among the highest branch-mint outputs the series ever recorded from that facility. The strong delivery reflected sustained Southern and Gulf-region commercial demand during the early Roosevelt years, with the New Orleans presses running at heavy volume to support trade through Mississippi River and Gulf Coast channels. The O mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle's tail feathers in the standard branch placement. The 1902-O is the second-highest O-mint figure in the entire Barber Quarter run and ranks among the most accessible New Orleans dates in the series. Despite the substantial mintage, survival skews heavily toward circulated material because most pieces entered commerce immediately and few were preserved in original condition during the bag-storage era. The date remains widely available in the lower and middle circulated grades and represents one of the easier New Orleans completions in a date-and-mint set.

Strike quality on the 1902-O runs below the series average but is generally better than the smaller-mintage New Orleans issues of the period. Liberty's hair detail under the cap can show softness at the centers, and the LIBERTY headband letters often display partial definition even on technically uncirculated examples. The eagle's shield horizontal lines and the lower arrow feathers are common weak spots, while the wreath leaves and reverse motto typically come up cleaner. Grade distribution at the major TPGs (third-party grading services like PCGS and NGC) is broad through Fine and VF, comfortable through XF, and steady into the lower Mint State range, with MS-64 obtainable and MS-65 examples appearing with reasonable regularity. MS-66 and finer survivors are condition-rare. No major die varieties are catalogued in Cherrypickers' Guide for the year. Authentication should confirm the small, round O mintmark consistent with the New Orleans punch style.

For collectors the 1902-O serves as one of the more accessible New Orleans dates suitable for representative type or date-set purposes. Circulated examples in VG through VF trade at modest premiums over common-date material, while choice AU and Mint State pieces with original surfaces command meaningful premiums. Date-and-mint set builders typically secure this issue at the VF to XF level before pushing into uncirculated grades. The realistic budget step up to MS-65 reflects honest grade-distribution scarcity rather than premium pricing on the date itself.
