1902 Proof

The 1902 Proof Barber Quarter is a Philadelphia issue with a verified proof mintage of 777 pieces, struck through the Mint's annual subscription program. The 12,197,000 figure above is a database error carrying the year's circulation total; the build pass will replace it with the correct 777. The 1902 marks a structural shift in the Barber Quarter proof series: from this date forward the Mint moved away from the Cameo Proof preparation used through 1901 and toward an All-Brilliant Proof finish in which fields and devices alike came up fully mirrored, with no frosted contrast on the relief. The change applied across the silver denominations. Standard specs apply: 6.25 grams, 24.3 millimeters, 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, reeded edge.

Authentication on the 1902 proof rests on the standard markers visible under a 10x loupe. The rims show a squared profile, the denticles run fully formed around the periphery, the fields carry deep watery mirrors, and Liberty's hair along with the eagle's shield, arrow, and feather definition comes up razor-crisp. The all-brilliant finish means Cameo and Deep Cameo (DCAM) designations from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, are markedly scarcer than on the 1892-1901 cameo-era proofs, with limited cameo survivors typically showing partial frost rather than full bright-on-black contrast. The 1902 also requires the standard prooflike-business-strike check given the 12.2 million Philadelphia circulation run: an occasional early-die piece carries shallow mirror, but the squared rim, full denticle count, and high-relief sharpness on a true proof remain unmistakable. Light die-polish lines are normal for the type.

The 1902 trades as a routine brilliant proof in PR63 through PR65, with the meaningful premium attaching to certified Cameo and Deep Cameo coins because of the finish-era transition. PCGS and NGC population data place combined certified survival in the high three hundreds, with the curve thinning rapidly above PR66 Cameo. The collecting arc moves from a PR64 in brilliant toward a PR65 Cameo when one with full eye appeal surfaces, and a 1902 DCAM draws strong demand when one reaches the major auctions.
