The 1904 Proof Barber Quarter is a Philadelphia issue with a verified proof mintage of 670 pieces, sold through the Mint's annual subscription program. The 9,588,813 figure above is a database error carrying the year's circulation total; the build pass will replace it with the correct 670. The 670-piece order book is the lowest of the 1900-1903 cluster and reflects a modest pullback in subscription demand. The 1904 sits inside the all-brilliant finish window that opened in 1902, with dies prepared so that fields and devices alike came up fully mirrored rather than the bright-on-black cameo contrast standard through 1901. Standard specs apply: 6.25 grams, 24.3 millimeters, 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper, reeded edge. San Francisco struck no quarters in 1904, making it a two-coin year on the circulation side.
Authentication on the 1904 proof rests on the standard markers visible under a 10x loupe. The rims show a squared profile, the denticles run fully formed around the periphery, the fields carry deep watery mirrors beside Liberty's portrait, and Liberty's hair along with the eagle's shield, arrow, and feather definition comes up razor-crisp. The all-brilliant finish means Cameo and Deep Cameo (DCAM) designations from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, are markedly scarcer than on the cameo-era proofs. The 1904 also requires the standard prooflike-business-strike check against the 9.59 million circulation run, but the squared rim, full denticle count, and proof-only sharpness remain unmistakable. Light die-polish lines are normal for the type.
The 1904 trades at a small premium to the 1902 and 1903 because of the lower 670 mintage, with PR63 and PR64 brilliant examples at predictable price levels and PR65 coins appearing at the major auctions on a regular schedule. Certified Cameo coins draw the meaningful premium, and Deep Cameo examples remain a specialist target that commands multi-thousand-dollar levels when one reaches market. PCGS and NGC data place combined certified survival in the mid three hundreds, thinning sharply above PR66 Cameo. The collecting arc moves from a PR64 in brilliant toward a PR65 Cameo for the upgrade buyer. Original toned coins command additional premium. For the broader story of Charles E. Barber's design and the series' production arc, see the Barber Quarter series history.
