About this coinHistory

The 1906-O quarter was struck at the New Orleans Mint to a mintage of 2,056,000 pieces, a typical late-period figure for the branch. New Orleans continued its long-running Barber quarter production into the final years before coinage operations there would conclude in 1909. The "O" mintmark sits on the reverse beneath the eagle's tail feathers in the standard position used throughout the New Orleans series. Distribution moved through Gulf and Mississippi corridor commerce, with most pieces entering circulation and seeing meaningful wear before being withdrawn. Mint State survival is moderate; the 1906-O is not condition-rare in the way the 1905-O is, but it is not abundant in upper grades either. Most uncirculated examples in collector hands trace back to the bag-storage period of the 1930s and 1940s, when New Orleans-stored quantities were released into the numismatic market.

Strike on the 1906-O runs typical for late New Orleans output: generally average to slightly below the series median. The LIBERTY headband shows variable completeness, Liberty's hair under the cap can be soft in spots, and the eagle's shield horizontal lines occasionally lack full definition. The denticle ring is usually complete on the reverse. Grade distribution at the major TPGs (third-party grading services like PCGS and NGC) is weighted toward VF and XF, with AU and Mint State counts present but smaller. MS-63 and MS-64 are obtainable; MS-65 thins; MS-66 is condition-rare. No major die varieties are catalogued in Cherrypickers' Guide for this issue. Authentication should confirm the O mintmark position below the eagle's tail; the punch placement is consistent throughout the New Orleans run and serves as the primary diagnostic against altered Philadelphia coins.

For collectors the 1906-O sits in the affordable range across circulated grades and offers reasonable availability at the choice uncirculated level. Selectivity for full headband detail and original surfaces pays off at auction. The date is a workmanlike inclusion in date-and-mint set efforts rather than a marquee piece. For more on the New Orleans operations during the late series and overall production patterns, see the Barber Quarter series history.
