About this coinHistory

The 1908-O Barber quarter, struck at the New Orleans Mint at 6,244,000 pieces, represents the highest "O"-mint quarter mintage in the entire Barber series. The southern facility was in its penultimate operational year for silver coinage when this delivery hit the presses, and the substantial output reflected continued strong demand across the Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi economy. New Orleans quarters of this date circulated heavily through cotton-factor settlements, Mardi Gras-week retail activity, and the burgeoning Port of New Orleans shipping trade. They entered commerce in volume and stayed there, which shapes the population available to collectors more than a century later.

Strike characteristics on the 1908-O follow the general New Orleans pattern: dies were often used to higher states of wear than at Philadelphia, and softness can appear on Liberty's hair detail above the ear, the wreath ribbon, and the eagle's wing tip. That said, the larger production run also yielded a meaningful number of well-struck early-die-state pieces, and 1908-O quarters with sharp central detail surface in dealer inventory more often than the smaller New Orleans deliveries of the surrounding years. The "O" mintmark sits on the reverse below the eagle, between the arrow feathers and the wreath base, and authentication should confirm clean punch depth and the correct rounded shape consistent with known authentic die marriages. Weight at 6.25 grams and diameter at 24.3 mm provide additional diagnostic anchors. Surviving population is heavily weighted toward circulated grades from Good through XF, with AU coins available and Mint State examples obtainable at MS-60 to MS-63 with patience; gem-quality MS-65 and above pieces are scarcer than the high mintage might suggest, as bag-handling marks on Liberty's cheek and the eagle's breast remain the chief grading constraint at the high end of the population pyramid.
