Philadelphia produced 4,400,700 quarters in 1912, a year marked by events both tragic and transformative. The Titanic sank in April, and Arizona and New Mexico were admitted as the 47th and 48th states, completing the contiguous United States. No Denver quarters were produced in 1912, leaving Philadelphia and San Francisco as the only two active mints for the denomination. The election of Woodrow Wilson that November would bring a new direction to Progressive Era governance.
PCGS estimates 7,000 survive across all grades, with 400 in Mint State and 50 at the gem level. The 1912 is a standard date available in circulated grades. The two-mint year (with no D-mint production) simplifies the collecting target for 1912 to Philadelphia and San Francisco only. Circulated examples in VG to Fine are the standard encounter, and Mint State coins appear at auction with regularity. The coin is one of the later Philadelphia Barber quarter dates and serves well as a representative of the series' final years for type collectors.
