About this coinHistory

The 1915-S Barber quarter, struck at the San Francisco Mint at 704,000 pieces, is the final San Francisco Barber quarter and a genuine condition-scarce issue from the series' closing run. The modest delivery reflected San Francisco's lighter coinage schedule during the Panama-Pacific International Exposition year, when much of the facility's die capacity was absorbed by the commemorative half dollar, gold dollar, quarter eagle, and the famous fifty-dollar octagonal and round commemorative pieces struck for the fair. Quarters from this issue circulated across California, Nevada, Arizona, and the Pacific Northwest, paying for everyday goods in port-city commerce, mining-camp payrolls in the silver and copper districts, and the bustling retail trade surrounding the exposition itself.

Strike characteristics on the 1915-S display the typical San Francisco late-series pattern: Liberty's hair detail above the ear can show softness on later-die-state examples, the wreath ribbon often appears compressed, and the eagle's left wing tip on the reverse is frequently incomplete. Survival is concentrated in Good through Fine, the small mintage entered hard immediate circulation and persisted in pocket change for decades. PCGS estimates roughly 2,000 coins survive across all grades, with only about 80 in Mint State and around 15 at the gem level, placing this issue among the more condition-scarce dates of the series even though its raw mintage stays well above the Key Date trio of 1896-S, 1901-S, and 1913-S. The "S" mintmark on the reverse below the eagle's tail is a frequent authentication focus given the date's last-year-of-mint significance; legitimate "S" punches show a clean rounded interior, consistent depth, and the correct font compared to common-date San Francisco issues, with diagnostic checks including weight at 6.25 grams within tolerance, diameter at 24.3 mm, and a continuous reeded edge without seam or repair work near the mintmark area. Mint State pieces command substantial premiums, and gem-quality examples are true condition rarities.
