About this coinHistory

The 1840 Drapery is the first Philadelphia Seated quarter struck from a modified obverse hub that introduced drapery folds at Liberty's elbow. The change arrived mid-year as part of a broader design tightening that ran in parallel across the silver denominations, with sculptor Robert Ball Hughes credited for reworking the figure originally adapted by Christian Gobrecht from his 1836-1839 Gobrecht Dollar. Reported Philadelphia delivery for the 1840 Drapery sits at 188,127 pieces, a small figure even for the era and a noticeable step down from the 491,146-piece 1839 No Drapery run that preceded it. The opening No Drapery production for 1840 took place at New Orleans rather than Philadelphia; the Mother Mint's 1840 output is exclusively the Drapery subtype, which gives the issue a clean attribution profile.

Strike on the issue is uneven but generally legible, with softness occasionally appearing at Liberty's head, the inner shield lines, and the eagle's claws and lower leg feathers. The diagnostic for the new subtype is straightforward: examine Liberty's left elbow as the viewer sees it on the right side of the obverse for the added cloth folds extending downward from the arm into the gown. A smooth elbow with no fabric extending below marks the older No Drapery hub; a visible drapery band confirms the 1840 mid-year change and every subtype that follows through 1891. The diagnostic remains readable well into Very Good. Survival skews to the Fine through Extremely Fine band, with Mint State examples genuinely uncommon. PCGS and NGC populations thin sharply above MS62, gem MS65 survivors are scarce, and counterfeit risk is moderate enough at higher grades that certification through a major grading service is the practical baseline. Weight should fall near 6.68 g per the Mint Act of January 18, 1837 standard then in effect.

The 1840 Drapery trades as a transitional issue rather than a date rarity in the strict sense. The low Philadelphia mintage keeps the date scarcer than most early-1840s Seated quarters in upper grades, but circulated examples in problem-free Very Fine or Extremely Fine clear without much delay because most subtype collectors prefer the more available later Drapery dates for the slot. Date-set buyers chasing a complete 1838-1844 run pay attention here; the issue often comes up as a quiet stopper above Extremely Fine when a set nears completion. Original gray patina and a sharp drapery diagnostic matter more than chasing the highest numeric grade. For the broader story of Gobrecht's design, the No Drapery to Drapery transition, and the series' production arc, see the Seated Liberty Quarter series history.
